Stay in Your Lane: Why Comparison is the Thief of Joy

Something that comes up a lot with my clients.

We’ve all been there. Scrolling through social media, checking Strava stats, or making strides in business, only to see someone else seemingly miles ahead. Instantly, doubt creeps in. Should I be doing more? Am I behind? Why do they have it all figured out? Comparison, my friend, is the thief of joy—and if you’re not careful, it can pull you right off your own path.

But here’s the truth: success, fulfilment, and happiness aren’t about being the fastest, the strongest, or the most accomplished. They’re about staying true to your journey, your values, and your unique timeline. Here’s how to stop the comparison trap in its tracks and reclaim your energy.

Why Do We Compare?

Comparison is hardwired into us—it’s how we measure progress, understand social norms, and find inspiration. But when left unchecked, it morphs from motivation into self-doubt, making us feel like we’re never doing enough.

From tracking miles on Strava to watching someone launch a business just as you were about to, the comparison cycle can feel relentless. What we often forget, though, is that no two people have the same starting point, resources, or circumstances. Everyone has different challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities shaping their path. The highlight reel never tells the full story, and what works for one person may not align with another’s reality.

How to Stay in Your Lane & Own Your Journey

1. Check in With Yourself

When you feel comparison creeping in, pause. Ask yourself:

  • Why do I feel this way?

  • What does this person’s success actually mean for me?

  • Am I looking at their journey with full context—or just the curated highlights?

More often than not, comparison isn’t about them—it’s about our own insecurities. Use it as a sign to reflect on your own goals rather than someone else’s.

2. Recognise That Every Journey is Different

Life isn’t a perfectly linear path. It’s full of bumps, setbacks, and breakthroughs that look different for everyone.

3. Shift From Comparison to Inspiration

Rather than feeling deflated by someone else’s success, use it as proof of possibility. If they did it, so can you—on your own terms. Turn envy into curiosity: What can I learn? What steps align with my values? The more you focus on what excites you, the less you’ll worry about what others are doing.

4. Set Goals Based on Your Own Priorities

If you don’t define success for yourself, you’ll always feel like you’re falling short. Get clear on:

  • What you want (not what looks good on Instagram)

  • What fits your life circumstances

  • What feels sustainable and fulfilling for you

Stay focused on your own progress, no matter how small. Your pace is perfect.

5. Detox from the Noise

Social media, apps, and online comparison traps can amplify feelings of inadequacy. If scrolling leaves you feeling less than, take a break. Unfollow accounts that trigger self-doubt and replace them with content that uplifts and empowers you.

6. Remember: There’s Room for Everyone

Just because someone else is thriving doesn’t mean there’s less success available for you. The world isn’t running out of opportunities, health, happiness, or personal wins. Your journey is entirely your own, and no one else can walk it the way you do.

Own Your Path, Celebrate Your Wins

The road to success—whether in fitness, business, or life—is never a straight line. It’s bumpy, unpredictable, and uniquely yours. Instead of wasting energy looking sideways, channel it into your own growth. You are exactly where you need to be, and the best way forward is to focus on your next step—not someone else’s finish line.

So, stay in your lane. Run your own race. And most importantly—enjoy it.

Because comparison may be the thief of joy, but staying true to yourself is the ultimate win.
