Staying Active on Holiday: A Relaxed Approach to Travel and Movement

Holidays are a perfect (and important) time to switch off from routines and recharge, but that doesn’t mean leaving movement behind. For my family staying active while away adds more joy to the holiday—without feeling like a chore. Here’s why staying active is fun, how it benefits your whole family, and why movement matters, even when you're taking time out.

Movement on Holiday Feels Good

There’s something magical about exercising in a new setting—whether it’s a morning run along a sunny coastline, a quick gym session with a view, or simply wandering through a beautiful city on foot. It doesn’t have to be intense or planned; just moving in a way that feels good can add energy to your day. Plus, it’s a great way to soak in your surroundings. Holidays are for enjoyment, and movement is just another way to feel alive and present in the moment.

Bonding Through Activity

Getting active together as a family, with friends or with your partner can create some of the best memories. Whether it’s a game of tennis, a paddleboard session, or just splashing about in the pool, shared moments bring a sense of connection. Movement doesn’t need to be perfect or competitive—it’s about having fun and setting an example that staying active is part of life, no matter where you are. Kids naturally love to move, and holidays are a chance to lean into that playful energy together.

The Balance of Consistency and Letting Go

Unless you are on a planned sports break, I don’t think there’s a need to stick to a strict fitness plan while you’re away—holidays are a time to break from rigid routines. But that doesn’t mean skipping movement altogether. A simple stretch before breakfast, a quick swim, or a walk after dinner is often enough to keep you feeling good. It’s all about balance: consistency keeps you feeling energised, while the flexibility of ‘no rules’ gives you space to recharge.

Travel Trends in Fitness and Wellness

Over the years, the way we travel has evolved, with fitness and wellness now playing a bigger role. Hotels and resorts are recognising this shift, offering everything from fully equipped gyms to yoga decks and outdoor activities. What’s also exciting is that this trend isn’t exclusive to luxury resorts—you’ll find ways to move no matter your budget. Without a hotel gym you can take coastal walks, park trails, or even simple bodyweight exercises in your room. Movement doesn’t need fancy facilities; it just needs a little creativity.

Looking ahead to 2025, travel trends are set to focus even more on wellness, with:

  • Family and group-friendly fitness options: Sports like padel or group activities becoming staples in many hotels.

  • Outdoor experiences: Hiking trails, water sports, and fitness activities that make the most of nature.

  • Sustainability and mindfulness: Travel that encourages unplugging and slowing down, with movement built into the experience.

Why Movement Matters

Holidays are for relaxing, but moving your body has so many benefits:

  • It lifts your mood, giving you that extra holiday glow.

  • A light walk or swim helps with digestion, especially when enjoying richer meals.

  • It keeps you feeling energised and grounded, so you don’t return home feeling sluggish.

The beauty of movement on holiday is that it’s completely your choice. No pressure—just doing what feels right for you, your friends and your family.

Flow, Not Rules

One of the best parts of being away is the freedom to do things differently. Maybe you’ll skip your usual workout one day for a longer breakfast or read a book by the pool. Other days, you might feel like heading to the gym or going for a long walk. There’s no right or wrong—just finding what works in the moment. Movement can be as simple as exploring a local market or as adventurous as trying a new sport.

Holidays are all about connection—whether it’s with yourself, your family, or the world around you. Adding movement into your time away doesn’t need to be a big deal—it’s about fun, flow, and feeling good. So whether you’re heading to a luxury retreat or a cosy countryside stay, moving in your own way will leave you refreshed, energised, and ready to make the most of every moment.
